Why We Should Colonize the Ocean Before Space

By Dr. Sylvia Marston

The dream of colonizing space has captivated humanity for generations, but why do we ignore the uncharted frontier beneath our oceans? Earth’s oceans cover more than 70% of the planet, yet we have explored less than 5% of their depths. Instead of pouring trillions into Mars missions, we should first build sustainable underwater cities.

The benefits of ocean colonization are undeniable. We could harness geothermal energy, discover new medicines from deep-sea organisms, and create new living spaces for our ever-growing population. Unlike Mars, which has no breathable air or liquid water, Earth’s oceans already provide vital resources for human survival.

Critics argue that the deep sea presents its own challenges, but with advancements in marine technology, these obstacles are more solvable than the vast difficulties of interplanetary travel. Before we reach for the stars, let’s first unlock the potential of our own planet’s depths.
